MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Heavy, wet snow that has fallen across the Twin Cities in the past day has forced the cancelation of this weekend’s Big Ten softball home series between Minnesota and Illinois.
In order to retain the games on their schedules, the Gophers and Illini have agreed to play three games in Champaign, Ill., this weekend.
The Gophers (23-13, 6-3 Big Ten) and Illini (11-22, 1-8 Big Ten) will play a Saturday doubleheader at Illinois’ Eichelberger Field, with the first game slated to start at 1:00 p.m. CT. The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
The decision was made because it was deemed unlikely for Minnesota’s grounds crew to prepare the playing surface at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium in time to be able to play. The local forecast calls for the possibility of more snow accumulation Thursday night before tapering off on Friday morning.
Fans with tickets to any of this weekend’s games will be able to redeem those tickets for any of Minnesota’s remaining home games this season. This weekend had also been scheduled to be Social Media Weekend, and that promotion will now take place during the three-game series against Indiana, May 3-5.
