Big Ten Release
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Minnesota softball freshman Sara Groenewegen received Big Ten Pitcher of the Week and Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week honors after her performance in a Sunday doubleheader against Wisconsin, the league announced Monday afternoon. A week after sharing Freshman of the Week honors with Purdue's Katy McJunkin, Groenewegen splits the award with Nebraska's Marjani Knighten this week.
Groenewegen's weekly accolades are the team's fifth and sixth of the season. Sara Moulton earned the conference's Pitcher of the Week Award three times before Groenewegen took Co-Freshman of the Week last week.
In addition to going 3-for-6 at the plate to share the team lead with a .500 batting average last week, Groenewegen pitched a no-hitter into the seventh inning in her first-career start against Border Battle rival Wisconsin and first-ever start at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium, allowing just five base runners all game and striking out nine. She finished with her eighth win of the year--she is now 8-0 with 84 strikeouts--a complete-game shutout.
The Gophers dropped the first game, 2-1, before rebounding for a 3-0 victory in the second game. Minnesota is off to a program-best 28-5 start and will face Iowa in a doubleheader Tuesday on Big Ten Network beginning at 3 p.m.
