The No. 5/5 University of Minnesota Gophers topped Iowa 3-0 in front of a Jane Sage Cowles record breaking crowd of 1,383 fans.

"Today's crowd was unbelievable," head coach Jessica Allister said. "We are fortunate to have who I think are the best fans in the country.

Sara Groenewegen had one of her most impressive weeks in the circle ever with two wins against Iowa and one against Wisconsin. She went 3-0 and had 35 strikeouts while only walking two batters and not allowing a run. She is now 22-2 on the season with a 0.52 ERA and has pitched 15 complete games.

Like Friday, Groenewegen found herself in a pitching duel with Iowa's Allison Doocy early. Sophomore Maddie Houlihan broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning in exciting fashion. She hit a sharp ball to shallow left and booked it all the around the bases as the ball skirted by a diving left fielder for an inside the park home run. Danielle Parlich also scored on the play.

Parlich and Kendyl Lindaman both drew walks to start the fifth. Parlich was able to reach second on a fielding error and made it to third on a wild pitch. Houlihan stepped to the plate next and delivered again with an RBI single up the middle. With her two runs today Parlich now has a team leading 48 on the season.

Houlihan had her best week of the season with a .526 batting average in five games. She had two home runs, eight RBIs and a slugging percentage of .842. She is hitting .406 on the season.

Iowa tallied a hit in the sixth and seventh inning but Groenewegen and the defense stayed strong to not allow any damage. The defense was errorless on the day with a number of nice plays from Allie Arneson at shortstop and Parlich at third.

The Maroon and Gold had seven hits on the day with Houlihan and MaKenna Partain each notching two. Eight different Gophers are hitting above .300 and four are hitting above .380 on the season.

After the weekend sweep the Gophers are 43-3 overall and 16-1 in the Big Ten. They have won 14 games in a row which is the fourth longest win streak in program history. The Gophers have won 15 games in a row twice and earlier this season had a record long 19 game winning streak.

The Gophers return to action at home this Wednesday for a doubleheader against North Dakota State with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
