FORT MYERS, FLA. - Junior right-hander Sara Moulton threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and sophomore shortstop Tyler Walker went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, as Minnesota wrapped up its appearance at the FGCU/LaQuinta Inn at the Airport Spring Break Invitational with a 1-0 win against Albany.
Moulton improved to 7-4 by putting the icing on a dominating weekend for her in the circle. She went 4-0 with a 0.71 earned run average in 29.2 innings pitched, striking out 42 batters with just seven walks, and limiting opposing batters to just eight hits and a .085 average.
Walker pulled her second home run of the season over the fence in right-center with one out in the bottom of the third, and it wound up being the only run Moulton would need. Senior first baseman Alex Davis went 1-for-3 with a double, while sophomore third baseman Kaitlyn Richardson, senior catcher Kari Dorle and freshman left fielder Sydney Fabian added singles for the Gophers.
The Gophers also played great defense behind their All-Big Ten pitcher, with Richardson and Davis teaming up on a fantastic defensive gem in the second inning to keep the no-hitter alive. Walker also made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch in shallow left field for the first out of the seventh inning.
Minnesota (7-7) returns to action next weekend at Auburn University's War Eagle Classic.
