A trio of Golden Gopher soccer players earned Soccer Buzz Great Lakes All-Region honors. Senior goalkeeper Molly Schneider earned second-team honors, while senior defender Nicki Burnie was named to the third-team. Defender Clare Grimwood was named to the Soccer Buzz All-Region Freshman Team. It's the first time since 2000 that a Golden Gopher has earned all-region honors.
A native of Rochester, Minn., Schneider was named first-team All-Big Ten after leading the conference with a 0.65 goals-against-average in league games. She finished the 2005 season with a school record 0.84 gaa. Schneider started 37 straight matches in the past two seasons after transferring from Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She broke the school's career record with a 1.12 goals-against-average.
A former walk-on from Menomonee Falls, Wis., Burnie was named second-team All-Big Ten after anchoring the league's best defense. Overall, the Golden Gopher defense did not allow more than one goal in the final 10 games. Burnie played in all 19 matches this past season with 18 starts.
A rookie from Eagan, Minn., Grimwood led the Golden Gophers and finished sixth in the Big Ten with seven assists. She was one of three Minnesota players to start all 19 matches. Grimwood was also a key component of a defense that cut its Big Ten goals-against- average from 1.70 in 2004 to 0.65 in 2005.
