MINNEAPOLIS - The National Soccer Coaches Association of American named the student-athletes who were selected as 2013 NSCAA Scholar All-Americans on Wednesday. The student-athletes were honored for their dedication to their studies while excelling on the field. To be named a Scholar All-American, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average throughout their career while starting more than 50 percent of all games and be an asset to the team.
Junior Katie Thyken, who is studying Biomechanical Engineering and boasts a 3.97 GPA, was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-American Third Team. Thyken was a co-captian for the Golden Gophers this season where she led the team with 7 goals and 3 assists for a total of 17 points.
Thyken was a 2013 All-Academic Big Ten honoree for the second-consecutive year. She was named to Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on October 28 after an impressive two-goal performance against Big Ten foe Purdue and was also named to the NCAA Division I Women's All-Great Lakes Region Second Team by the NSCAA.
Thyken is one of five Big Ten players who were named Scholar All-Americans.
