For the seventh time in program history, the Minnesota women's soccer team has been selected for the NCAA tournament after being selected to host the first and second rounds of the 64-team tournament next weekend at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Gophers will host Creighton in the first round while Texas A&M and North Dakota State will also meet in the opening round.
Game times for the opening round matchups on Friday are proposed for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. CST. The No. 6 Aggies and Bison will compete in the first game while the Gophers and Bluejays will battle in the follow-up game. The winners of each game will meet on Sunday, Nov. 14 with a proposed start time of 1 p.m.
The Gophers (12-5-3 overall, 4-4-2 Big Ten) finished sixth in the Big Ten this year and were one of six conference teams to be selected in this year's national tournament along with co-Big Ten champions Penn State and Ohio State as well as Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois.
Minnesota has made six previous appearances in the NCAA tournament in its history including a string of five-straight postseason runs from 1995-99. In just the third year of play, the Gophers made their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in 1995 and reached the first round a second time in 1996 before reaching the second round in back-to-back-to-back seasons from 1997-99. However, Minnesota hit a milestone in 2008 when head coach Mikki Denney Wright took the team to its first-ever Round of 16 appearance.
2008 also marked the last time Minnesota and Creighton have met on the pitch with the Gophers picking up a 3-0 win over the Bluejays at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on on Sept. 7. The Gophers are 1-2-1 all-time against Creighton.
More information for the NCAA tournament will be published as it becomes available. Times are subject to change.
