Minnesota Soccer’s Kylie Kallman was named the Big Ten’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Kallman, a freshman out of Woodbury, Minn., won the award for her outstanding effort in the Gophers’ weekend matches with Ohio State and Penn State. The Gophers’ 1-0 upset win over No. 8 Penn State Sunday was their first since 1997 and snapped an 11-game unbeaten streak for the NittanyLions.
Kallman becomes the first Gopher to win a weekly award this season and is Minnesota’s first defensive honoree since keeper Lindsey Dare won the award on Sept. 11 of last year. Northwestern’s Lauren Johnston will share the award with Kallman this week.
Kallman is a member of a back defensive line that includes three freshman (along with Julie Rezac of Eden Prairie and Jennie Clark of Norwalk, Iowa) and led an outstanding Gopher defensive effort against the Nittany Lions Sunday afternoon. Matched up with the Penn State’s Katie Schoepfer for much of the match, Kallman effectively contained the conference's leading scorer. Schoepfer totaled just three shots (none on goal), as the Gopher defense held one of the conference’s highest-scoring teams scoreless for over 102 minutes in the upset win. It was just the second time Penn State has been shut out all season.
Fresh off their stunning upset Sunday, the Golden Gophers will look to keep that momentum as they travel to Northwestern (Friday at 3:00 p.m.) and Wisconsin (Sunday at 1:00 p.m.). Friday afternoon’s game time is a change from the originally scheduled 4:00 p.m. start. Live stats for both matches will be available on gophersports.com.
*NOTE: Sunday's match will be broadcast as a tape delay tonight (Monday, Oct. 22) at 7:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network. BTN is available on Dish Network and DirecTV.
