|| Minnesota vs. No. 20 San Diego State/DePaul
The University of Minnesota women's soccer team hosts the Fifth-Annual Minnesota Gold Classic this weekend. The Golden Gophers welcome DePaul, Iowa State and No. 20 San Diego State to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium for the tournament weekend.
The Gophers will play two matches with the first being Friday night at 7 p.m. against the nationally ranked Aztecs. Minnesota will then turn around and face DePaul on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both opponents defeated the Maroon & Gold, 2-1, last season.
Scouting San Diego State
The Aztecs come to ELR Stadium for their first road contest of the 2012 season. They are coming off a 1-0 win over then-No. 5 Pepperdine, which has placed them No. 20 in the NSCAA poll with a 5-0-0 record. Thus far this season, SDSU has yet to allow a goal and tallied five-consecutive shutouts with redshirt sophomore Rachel Boaz in goal. Offensively, the Aztecs are led by sophomore Haley Locker, who has three goals on the year.
San Diego State currently hold a 2-0-0 advantage over the Gophers. Their last meeting was last fall with the Aztecs defeating Minnesota 2-1 in San Diego, Calif.
DePaul enters the weekend with a 4-1-1 record on the year after only garnering three wins last fall (one against the Gophers). The Blue Devils have had a stinge defense this season as they have only allowed three goals despite catching their opponents offsides 18 times. Megan Pyrz is the backstop in goal for DePaul, and she was named the BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Week this past week for recording a shutout on Friday and a 12-save performance on Sunday. Offensively, they are led by sophomore Amber Paul and junior Natasa Radosavljevic, who each have two goals and an assist on the year.
Uhl Named B1G Offensive Player of the Week
The B1G Conference named sophomore Taylor Uhl the league's Offensive Player of the Week for recording her third career hat trick in the Bowling Green match. It was the program's 13th in its 20-year history, and she is the lone player to have three hat tricks in a career.
Gopher Great Returns as Opposing Coach
DePaul is coached by former Golden Gopher great Erin Chastain (formerly Hussey). Chastain played on the first Minnesota team in 1993 and finished her four years in 1996. She currently sits 6th all-time in career points (83) and goals (29) while also sharing the record for most points (10) and goals (four) in a single match with current undergraduate coach Katie Bethke.
Gophers on the Web
Fans that can't make it out to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium can still catch all the action in 2012. Aside from a televised match against Michigan State on Sunday, Sept. 23, the Golden Gophers' other 12 remaining matches can be watched live with Gopher All-Access including this weekend's matches against San Diego State and DePaul.
Taylor Uhl broke the school record for consecutive matches with a goal being scored in the first 10 minutes of the San Diego match, but the sophomore would continue to extend the streak two more matches. Uhl had her streak come to an end at nine in the Sunday match-up with Western Kentucky as they marked her the whole match. The Eden Prairie, Minn. native still has an 11-match streak of recording a point going, which is also a school record.
In four of the six games this season, the Gophers have nabbed the lead within the first 10 minutes. The lone matches they didn't score early on was against USC and Western Kentucky, both still ended in favor of Minnesota.
Defending the Robbie
With the stereotype of being a tough home team, the Golden Gophers look to take advantage of their 12 home games this fall. In Gopher soccer history, the squad is 114-49-11 (.687) on their home pitch.
20th Year Anniversary
This fall marks the 20th-year anniversary for Golden Gopher soccer. In that time, the Maroon & Gold have reached the NCAA Tournament seven times and garnered three Big Ten Championships.
