The University of Minnesota Women's Soccer team finished the Minnesota Gold Classic on top as they defeated Ole Miss on Sunday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The Golden Gophers were able to come away with the win after a full 90 minutes of battle left the score tied. Pentalties were a major factor in this match, as both teams earned their inital goals off of pentalty kicks. At the end of regulation time, the Gophers and the Rebels tied at one goal a piece. Then during the first overtime period, freshman Josee Stiever was able to knock one in for Minnesota to put them ahead 2-1 at the end of the game.

This win over Ole Miss allowed the Gophers to move to 6-0-0 on the season while the Rebels fell to 4-1-1.

GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES

Josee Stiever, a freshman from Cedarburg, Wisc., was able to notch in her third goal of the season during the first overtime period. This weekend Stiever was able to assist freshman Ashley Pafko on the game winning goal on Friday night, score the game winner in Sunday's afternoon match against Ole Miss and she earned the pentalty kick that allowed Katie Thyken to tie the game in regulation.

Junior co-captain, Katie Thyken, was able to even the playing field against Ole Miss as she scored on the pentalty kick earned by Stiever. This was Thyken's sixth goal of the season. Thyken also scored in the match on Friday night against LSU.

QUOTES:

Head coach Stefanie Golan on today's match against Ole Miss...

"We didn't start the way we needed to. Our first half was not great and we let our players know that. I'm proud of the fact that they responded to that criticism and then we came out in the second half and challenged them. It says great things about our program that these girls were able to dig deep and find a way to win. Beating two quality SEC opponents back-to-back is not an easy task. LSU and Ole Miss will do well this season and they are great teams, so I'm excited for the start we've had so far in the season."

Golan on the upcoming roadtrip to Florida and Jacksonville...

"We're excited for a trip on the road. These teams are going to test us and push us; Florida is a tough place to play. Their fan-base is awesome and Florida is a top-10 program, so we need to come ready to face this challenge. This team has demonstrated that when we play really well we are an amazing team to watch."

Josee Stiever on coming back after a rough first half...

"Today we came out and battled, it was all heart today. We had a rough first half and then we really stepped it up in the second half. We were determined to come out with another win, so the second half was all heart and passion. We really came through today."

MacKenzie Misel on Sunday afternoon battles...

"Today's game was the definition of a battle. Our strength coach talks about battling through adversity and that has become a common theme for us so far this season. Sunday's are the true definition of battling and having the heart to win because nobody feels great on a Sunday. The older you get, the tougher it gets to play on these kinds of days and the farther you get into the season, the more difficult it is to play at the same level everyday."

Misel on the season thus far...

"Now we're undefeated with six wins, and it's never been like that as long as I've been here. This win gives us a lot of confidence. I've learned so much about being a part of a team. So far this year I've seen that teamwork develop as a part of each person's core values. We've learned to face adversity with injuries during games and bench players stepping up."
