On a sunny Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, sophomore Taylor Uhl guided the University of Minnesota women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over DePaul by notching her fourth career hat trick. Senior Allie Phillips assisted on a pair of Uhl's scores.
Sunday's match was never in limbo as the Golden Gophers would dominate play against DePaul the whole match. The Maroon & Gold would stifle the Blue Demons' defense with 24 shots while redshirt senior goalkeeper Cat Parkhill faced only four shots.
Minnesota got on the board in the 17th minute as senior Allie Phillips broke free along the end line and crossed a ball into the six-yard box. Phillips' cross would be flicked back by Katie Thyken before it landed at Uhl's feet, where she then volleyed the ball into the back of the net.
The Golden Gophers carried their 1-0 lead into halftime while also not allowing a DePaul shot in the first 45 minutes.
In the 55th minute, Phillips again got to the end line but this time dished a ball off to Thyken. The sophomore midfielder would blast a ball to the far post, but it would ricochet off the underside of the cross bar and bounce towards the middle of the box. Luckily, Uhl was waiting for the rebound and struck home the unassisted goal, giving the Gophers a 2-0 lead.
Uhl led the team with a total of nine shots on the day while freshman Haley Helverson took four and Thyken, Taylor Wodnick and Brianne Price notched three.
The sophomore capped off her tremendous day on the pitch in the 76th minute as she received a through ball from Phillips. Uhl would race the ball down before the DePaul goalkeeper could corral the ball and sliced the ball inside the far post to solidify her fourth career hat trick and 11th goal of the year.
For her efforts over the weekend, Uhl was voted Co-Offensive Most Valuable Player of the Minnesota Gold Classic by the coaches. She shared the accolade with San Diego State's Megan Jurado while teammate Rachel Boaz was named the Defensive Most Valuable Player.
Sunday's win caps off a four-game homestand for the Gophers in which they went 3-1 during. Throughout those four games, the Maroon & Gold allowed only one goal while scoring 11 of their own.
Minnesota gets back on the road next Sunday for their Big Ten Conference opener against Ohio State. The match in Columbus, Ohio is scheduled to kickoff at noon CST.
