Despite a game time change and a weather delay, the University of Minnesota women's soccer team defeated the Big East's Marquette University to open their 2014 home schedule on Friday evening and improve to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Maroon and Gold and the Golden Eagles fought through 59 minutes before freshman Sydney Squires put the ball in the back of the net with assistance from redshirt junior Taylor Stainbrook.
Minnesota held Marquette, who received votes in the latest NSCAA poll, for the remaining 31 minutes to earn its second shutout of the season.
Despite the Gophers victory, Marquette led the Maroon and Gold in shots 12-9 with six shots on target. Minnesota dominated in corner kicks 6-2.
The Golden Gophers continue their home schedule on Sunday afternoon against South Dakota State University at 1 p.m. CST.
GOPHER STAND OUT PERFORMANCES
Freshman Sydney Squires continued her successful start to the 2014 season as she picked up her third goal of the year. The freshman forward scored twice in the Gophers season opener against Stetson and also tallied an assist during that first game.
Redshirt junior Taylor Stainbrook collected her first start of the 2014 season and had an incredible match including the game winning assist. She tallied 1 shot and played 72 minutes for the Maroon and Gold.
Sophomore goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs had six saves in Friday evening's match bringing her season total to 17 saves. This is Hobbs' second shutout of 2014.

The Maroon and Gold host South Dakota State University on Sunday afternoon at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium at 1 p.m. CST.
