University of Minnesota head rowing coach Wendy Davis announced Tuesday that Peter Morgan has joined her staff as an assistant coach. Morgan brings more than 11 years of coaching experience to the Gopher program and will take over as the varsity assistant coach.
"We are really glad to have Peter as a member of our program, because he really understands and buys into what we are trying to do here," Davis said. "One of the most interesting things about Peter is that he is a pretty quiet guy, but he quietly goes about making boats faster, which is exactly what we are looking to achieve."
Morgan is no stranger to the Twin Cities, as he has coached in the area for nine years, most recently as the head coach of the University of Minnesota men's club rowing team. With the men's squad, Morgan led the heavyweight four to the 2012 American Collegiate Rowing Association National Championship, while his lightweight four won the bronze medal at the 2012 Dad Vail Regatta.
"This is a very exciting opportunity for me," Morgan said. "As a native Minnesotan, I have been following Gopher sports and the women's rowing team for a long time. To now be a part of it and working with a Division I program is pretty great."
Prior to his time at the University of Minnesota, Morgan spent five successful years as the head coach at the Minnesota Boat Club, where he developed a long-term program to identify, cultivate and assess rowers for competition at the national level. The club won the Northwest International Rowing Association overall points trophy in both 2009 and 2010 under Morgan's guidance, while the mixed masters double won a gold medal at the 2010 Masters World Championships.
Two years as an assistant coach at the Minneapolis Rowing Club followed a one-season stint as the head coach at the University of St. Thomas in 2003-04, where he was in charge of both the men's and women's squads.
Morgan also spent a year as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Harvard, in 1996-97, after completing his first stint with the Minneapolis Rowing Club a year earlier. And, from 1994-95, Morgan served as the head coach of the men's varsity program at Pittsburgh, where the varsity pair placed second at the 1995 Dad Vail regatta.
A 1992 Harvard graduate, Morgan rowed under legendary coach Harry Parker as a member of Harvard's varsity heavyweight program. Morgan also spent summers rowing with the Minneapolis Rowing Club, the Boston Rowing Center, and the USRowing Development program. A back injury his senior year prematurely ended his rowing career.
Morgan earned his Bachelor of Arts in Government with honors from Harvard, before spending a year in Germany at the University of Bonn studying international relations. Morgan graduated from Hamline University with a Masters of Fine Arts in writing in 2011.
