SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Gopher Rowing program began preparations for its 2018 spring season this week as the team set out to the sunshine and warmer weather of California. Novice Hailey Lothert obliged GopherSports.com with a quick training diary update from the shore.
Never did some of us think we'd be on the rowing team when we started college, but here we are, nearly dying on our training trip in San Diego. It's a good kind of pain: one that proves we are working hard, and one that makes it seem acceptable to eat a pint of ice cream in one sitting (sorry, Cloud!) [novice coach Claudia Herpertz].
So, why are we all still in it? For me, my teammates are what keep me going. There's no better bond than working together to accomplish a goal, like finishing a hard workout in the pouring rain in California. Sweat together, stay together, right? (And you can't tell it's sweat when it's raining!).
This trip to San Diego, and rowing in general, tests your mental toughness, as well as challenges your physical strength. It tests patience, accountability, and even your ability to make it to 6:45am practice when you get up at 6:30am! All in all, the first few days in San Diego have been a blast. Even though it has been a lot of work, the growth we are making as a team is making it all worth it. Bring on the Big Ten Championships!
Minnesota concludes its stay in the Golden State on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 2-3 when the team meets San Diego State in an exhibition dual.
