The University of Minnesota women's rowing team opened the 2012 season on a high note Saturday, as it swept Buffalo and Kansas in the morning session of the Oak Ridge Invitational on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The second varsity four crew of coxswain Rachael Rogers, Erica Revering, Katherine Moran, Jen Kohl and Debbie Brzozowski opened action at the event by placing first in a time of 7:42.00, almost seven seconds ahead of Buffalo, who finished second in 7:48.84.
The second varsity eight followed suit, with the squad of coxswain Emilie Sabourin, Caitlin Boon, Tabitha Andelin, Kathryn Switalski, Lynn Hodnet, Katherine Windsor, Sarah Sobek, Maddy Bourgeois and Katie Anderson clocking in at 6:42.00 to claim top honors in the second event of the day for the Gophers, nearly 26 seconds ahead of the second-place Bulls.
The varsity four and varsity eight boats also defeated the competition by double-digits in the final two events of the morning.
The 1V4, made up of coxswain Jackie Stein, Nicolette Marquardt, Jaime Frisicia, Chelsea Miller and Melissa Drezdzon defeated second-place Buffalo by 14 seconds in 7:17.30, while coxswain Sara Baldvins, Christine Beauparlant, Ellen Hughes, Ali Haws, Rebecca Braak, Molly Kalmoe, Kayla Thom, Becky Kinchen, Rachel Sartor clocked in 11 seconds ahead of the Bulls in 6:30.20 to claim the title.
The Golden Gophers will face Notre Dame and Kansas in the evening session, with the 2V4 set to be the first on the water at 4:28 p.m., followed by the 2V8 at 4:36 p.m., the 1V4 at 4:44 p.m. and the 1V8 at 4:52 p.m.
The event will conclude on Sunday morning with Minnesota facing off against Duke and Virginia with the first race set to begin at 9:48 a.m.
