Canadian Roster l Schedule/Results l Hockey Canada Release
A pair of Canadians in Kelly Terry and Sarah Davis will be spending their Holiday Break participating on Canada’s National Women’s Under-22/Development Team for the Meco Cup, which is taking place Jan. 2-6, 2013 in Buchloe, Füssen, Memmingen and Ravensburg, Germany.
Terry and Davis, who are both juniors on the Gopher women’s hockey team, are part of a 22 player roster that will face senior women’s national teams from Germany, Finland, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
Davis, who has nine points (4g-5a) this year with Minnesota, is making her second appearance at the Meco Cup after receiving bronze last winter. She is excited to be back playing with her fellow Canadians for the Holiday Break, but she hopes the team plays better this year.
“I was able to go with the U-22 team to Germany last year, and we didn’t do so well,” said Davis, who is a forward from Paradise, N.L. “But I’m excited for this year, and hopefully, we come back with a gold medal.”
On the other hand, Terry, who has 18 points (5g-13a) this season with the Gophers, will be making her first trip as a U-22/Development player. She is also excited to play against other countries’ senior national teams, but feels that there is a little added pressure to the Meco Cup this year.
“I think it is a great opportunity for all of us to expand our game, but it also brings a lot of pressure,” said Terry, who is a forward from Whitby, Ont. “It is kind of our last shot to prove that we can play at the senior level and are good enough to make the Canadian National Team, especially with the 2014 Olympics just around the corner.”
Terry will also have another first happen on the trip with traveling outside of North America for the first time in her life.
“I have never been out of North America, so I am really excited about that,” Terry said. “I don’t even know what to expect on the trip. We will have one day off midway through the tournament, so we will take advantage of that to get away from hockey and sightsee.”
Another highlight for the two Gophers will be having the chance to play against current Minnesota teammates Mira Jalosuo and Noora Räty for the first time outside of practice. Both Jalosuo and Räty have been invited to suit up with the Finnish National Team for the Meco Cup.
“I’m not really looked forward to it,” Terry said with a smirk. “Mira has a long stick back there, and obviously, Noora is unbelievable in goal. So it will be a little bit weird lining up against them. With being such good friends with them, I don’t know if we will be able to keep it serious on the ice.”
“I told Mira and Noora to make sure I look good because they already have their spots on the national team,” Davis said jokingly. “But seriously, it will be weird playing against them. I am sure I will be chirping at them a little bit and having fun with it.”
Terry and Davis will get their chance to skate against the Finns as the two countries have been thrown into the same group for the week. The Canadians kickoff group play on Jan. 2 against host Germany. They then take on Switzerland the following day and Finland on Jan. 5 before being seeded for a one-game playoff game.
