The WCHA announced on Wednesday that freshman Lee Stecklein was tagged as the league’s Rookie of the Week for her efforts in helping the University of Minnesota women’s hockey team sweep New Hampshire last weekend. Stecklein notched four points on the weekend and assisted in keeping the Golden Gophers 24-game winning streak alive.
Stecklein put together one of her best weekend's in her young career as she tallied four points (two goals, two assists). In Saturday's 10-2 win, the freshman netted her first career goal on a Gopher power play in the second period. She finished the game with three points (one goal, two assists). The Roseville, Minn. native kept it going on Sunday as she recorded the game-winning goal on another Minnesota power play in the first period of the game. She finished the weekend with a plus/minus ratio of +4.
This is Stecklein’s first Rookie of the Week honor. She is the fourth Minnesota freshman to receive the honor as Hannah Brandt has garnered the honor four times and Maryanne Menefee and Milica McMillen have been tagged once each.
Stecklein and the Gophers take their unblemished record of 16-0-0 into this weekend’s matchup against rival Wisconsin. The weekend series will be a rematch of the 2012 National Championship game, which the Maroon & Gold won, 4-2. Saturday’s game begins at 2 p.m., and tickets are only $1 for all fans.
