The Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced Wednesday afternoon that University of Minnesota senior goaltender Noora Räty and freshman forward Hannah Brandt received weekly league honors for their efforts in helping the Golden Gophers sweep then No. 6/7 Ohio State.
Räty was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week along with North Dakota’s goaltender Jorid Dagfinrud. The Espoo, Finland native was a force in goal for the Maroon & Gold this past weekend as she gained two wins and a shutout against the Buckeyes. Saturday’s win was her 83rd career victory, which ties Jody Horak for the most wins in program history. Over the two games, she denied 35 total shots and notched her 30th career shutout.
This is Räty’s first Defensive Player of the Week honor this season and the 10th of her career.
Brandt was tagged with her second Rookie of the Week honor as she notched six points in the Gophers’ sweep over OSU. She was a large catalyst in the series-opening, 7-2, win over the Buckeyes by scoring two goals and two assists. Her four-point performance was followed with a pair of assists on Saturday in Minnesota’s 8-0 win. The Vadnais Heights, Minn. native had a team-best +7 plus/minus rating over the weekend.
The Maroon & Gold hop back on the road this weekend as they travel to face North Dakota, who sits alongside the Gophers atop the WCHA standings. Games are slated to begin at 2:07 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
