Women's Hockey Suffers 4-1 Loss and Split the Fifth-Straight Series Against OSU

The University of Minnesota fell, 4-1 to Ohio State tonight, marking the fifth-straight time the two teams have split a series. The Gophers earned a 7-4 win the previous night at the OSU Ice Rink. With the loss the Golden Gophers drop to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. OSU earned its first conference win and now is 1-2-1 and 2-3-1 overall.

The Buckeyes scored two back-to-back goals in the first period to take an early lead. Mallory Peckels scored on a turnover at 17:00, while Lisa Chesson scored 49 seconds later at 17:49. Minnesota fired off 14 shots on goal to OSU's eight, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Buckeyes added to their lead at 8:29 in the second when Shannon Reilly scored her second goal of the season. Minnesota cut the lead to 3-1 when Erica McKenzie scored her seventh goal of the season at 12:47 of the second with Jen Schoullis setting her up for the single assist. The Buckeyes had a chance to put the game back at a three-goal lead when they had a 53 second five-on-three opportunity, but the Gophers did not allow a goal during that span.

OSU scored their fourth goal of the game at 7:11 of the third to put the game at 4-1 and the final. Hayley Klassen scored her first goal of the season.

Minnesota outshot the Buckeyes, 38-26, including 12 in the third period and allowing six to OSU. The Maroon and Gold held OSU scoreless on the power play in six attempts in tonight's game and four in the previous game for zero-for-10 with the extra attacker.

Kim Hanlon lost her first game of the 2007-08 season when she allowed four goals and had 22 saves. OSU's Liana Bonanno had 37 saves in her second win of the season.

The Gophers will look to return to the win column when Minnesota Duluth visits Ridder Arena, Oct. 26-27, with Minnesota celebrating its 10-year anniversary. The Gophers and Bulldogs face off at 6 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. next Saturday.
