Oct. 10, 2012

University of Minnesota freshman forward Maryanne Menefee was named Rookie of the Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) on Wednesday afternoon. Menefee generated a total of four points this weekend by tallying three goals and one assist.

On Friday night against St. Cloud State, the Lansing, Mich. native notched the first goal of the game on a power play and later assisted on the Gophers’ final score to cap off a 7-1 win. The freshman came back Saturday afternoon and again notched the first goal of the game on a power play along with adding another in the third period. Menefee was selected as the 1 Star for her two goals in Minnesota’s 4-0 win over SCSU.

Minnesota has now won back-to-back WCHA Rookie of the Week honors with Hannah Brandt receiving the accolade last week.

Minnesota State's Lauren Smith was tagged the league's Offensive Player of the Week, while Chelsea Knapp from Ohio State was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Menefee and the rest of the Golden Gophers hit the road this weekend for Canton, N.Y. to play St. Lawrence for their first road trip. The Gophers and the Skating Saints face off Friday night at 6 p.m. CT and then against Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT.
