Hansen Named Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

MINNEAPOLIS – Mandy Hansen has been selected to join the University of Minnesota Athletic Communications office as an assistant director of athletic communications, associate athletic director for strategic communications Chris Werle announced today.

Hansen will serve as the primary media contact for the two-time defending national champion women’s hockey program as well as women’s track and field, women’s cross country and men’s gymnastics. Hansen brings more than eight years of communications experience to the Gopher athletic department including serving as the media liaison for the 2011 NCAA women’s hockey championship team at Wisconsin.

"This is a tremendous opportunity, and I look forward to working with the university's student-athletes, coaches and administration along with the incredible fans and dedicated media connected to Gopher athletics. It's an exciting time to be a part of Gopher athletics, and I am honored to join the University of Minnesota family."

Hansen began her professional career as a graduate assistant at the University of Denver and spent two years with the Pioneers athletic department. Hansen served as the primary contact for women’s soccer and gymnastics and assisted with all aspects of communications for the Denver athletic department. Hansen spent the 2010-11 season as an athletic communications assistant at Wisconsin, where she oversaw communications efforts for women’s hockey, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s tennis.  Among her responsibilities, Hansen was on staff for the Badger women’s hockey team that captured the 2011 national championship and managed publicity for the team including 2011 Patty Kazmaier Award winner Meghan Duggan. Prior to joining the Gophers staff earlier this week, Hansen spent the last two years working in marketing at Hamline University School of Law.

“We’re delighted to bring Mandy’s communications and sports marketing expertise to Gopher athletics,” Werle said. “She brings experience both in and out of athletics to an already talented team of communications professionals.”

The Duluth, Minn., native earned her bachelor’s degree in communications and English at the College of St. Scholastica and completed her master’s degree in public relations at Denver.

A two-sport athlete at St. Scholastica, Hansen was a member of the women’s soccer program as well as a three-time all-conference honoree with the women’s track and field program. In addition to here athletic contributions, Hansen also served as a student assistant in the Saints sports information office for three years , assisting with all 18 of the college’s NCAA Division III teams.
