Aug. 18, 2014
MINNEAPOLIS - Golden Gophers Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, Milica McMillen and Lee Stecklein have been chosen to represent the United States as part of the 2014 U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team, which will face off against Canada in a three-game series Aug. 21-24 in Calgary, Alberta.
The roster was chosen from players who participated in the 2014 USA Hockey Women's National Festival, which took place Aug. 12-16 at the Lake Placid Olympic Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. The roster features a total of 22 players, with seven defensemen, 13 forwards and two goaltenders.
Roseville, Minn., native and Gopher defenseman Lee Stecklein is one of three players from the 2014 silver medal U.S. Olympic squad to also appear on the U-22 team, along with Boston College forward Alex Carpenter and Harvard defenseman Michelle Picard.
Representatives from twelve different states make up the team, and Minnesota is tied for the lead in the number of players with four (all four Gophers). One of the three assistant coaches, former NHL goalie Robb Stauber, also hails from Minnesota.
This year's event marks the 11th three-game series between the U.S. and Canada since 1999. The U.S. team held two practices and a scrimmage Aug. 17 and 18 in Lake Placid, N.Y., and will hold one practice in Canada Olympic Park in Calgary before the first puck drops at 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday, Aug. 21.
The 2014 U.S. Women's Under-18 Select Team will also face Canada in a three-game series this week. Minnesota associate head coach Joel Johnson is serving as the head coach of the U.S. U-18 team for the 2014-15 season. The U-18 series begins at 6 p.m. CT Thursday.
All games in both the U-22 and U-18 series will be streamed live at usahockey.fasthockey.com.
