MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's hockey team and head coach Brad Frost have announced the addition of an exhibition game with the Minnesota Whitecaps to the team's 2017-18 schedule. The teams will face off at Ridder Arena at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, Jan. 5.
The Gophers and Whitecaps will meet to kick off the second half of the collegiate season before the Maroon & Gold officially resume play against St. Cloud State in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 9.
The last four games between the Gophers and Whitecaps have ended in a score of 5-4 with Minnesota winning three of the four contests.
The Whitecaps are an elite, post-collegiate women’s hockey team. The team was started by Gopher alumnae Winny and Chelsey Brodt (last names now Brown and Rosenthal, respectively), along with their father, Jack Brodt. Dwayne Schmidgall and Jenny Schmidgall (now Potter) also contributed to the creation of the program.
The Whitecaps played in the Western Women’s Hockey League until the 2009-10 season. Since the 2010-11 season, the team has operated as an independent team, playing games against various collegiate and professional teams across the country.
Minnesota enters the 2017-18 season after advancing to its sixth-straight NCAA Women's Frozen Four last year and posting a 26-8-5 overall record. Four seniors will lead the 2017-18 Gophers, and the team welcomes six newcomers. Head coach Brad Frost continues at the helm of the program in his 11th season behind the bench.
Season tickets for the next chapter of Gopher women's hockey are on sale now. General admission season tickets are $79, and reserved chairbacks are available for $99.
