MINNEAPOLIS — Golden Gopher women's hockey alumna Milica McMillen has been named an assistant coach for the Ohio State women's hockey program under the direction of second-year head coach and fellow University of Minnesota alumna Nadine Muzerall, the Buckeyes recently announced.
McMillen spent the 2016-17 season playing professional hockey for the NWHL's New York Riveters after completing her collegiate career at Minnesota in 2015-16. The St. Paul, Minn., native was a standout defenseman for the Gophers and ended her career as one of the program's top-scoring blue-liners.
"Ohio State women's ice hockey team welcomes Milica McMillen to our family," Muzerall said in a statement from OSU. "Her success as a player and knowledge of the game will transition very well for what our players need. She has had great experiences with training hockey players to enhance their skill development. But more importantly, she has the right character and values that we are developing here at Ohio State with our culture. I'm excited to see the growth within our players both on and off the ice with Milica by our side."
A 2014 All-American and four-time All-WCHA honoree, McMillen played in 149 games for the Gophers from 2012-13 to 2015-16. She recorded 120 career points on 44 goals and 76 assists to rank fourth among all-time Minnesota defensemen; her 44 goals rank second in program history as well. McMillen helped the Gophers to three NCAA titles, winning national championships in 2013, 2015, and 2016.
With the New York Riveters last season, McMillen played in 18 games, scoring three goals and recording six assists while blocking 17 shots and helping the team to a record of 8-7-3. The 2016-17 season also marked Muzerall's first year at the helm of the Buckeyes, and OSU turned in a record of 14-18-5.
Minnesota and Ohio State are slated to meet at Ridder Arena in the Gophers' WCHA-opening series on Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7 before facing off in Columbus, Ohio, in January 2018.
