MINNEAPOLIS -- In anticipation of the upcoming season, GopherSports.com will take a closer look at each of the 2017-18 opponents that the Gopher women's hockey team plays. Up this week is Bemidji State.
About the Series: Minnesota vs. Bemidji State
The Gophers head into this season holding an all-time record of 69-8-7 against Bemidji State. The teams met seven times during the 2016-17 season with the Gophers winning five of the games. Kelly Pannek (5g-5a), Dani Cameranesi (4g-2a), and Sarah Potomak (1g-5a) led Minnesota against BSU last season.
Most recently, the Gophers beat the Beavers, two games to one in the best-of-three WCHA First Round series to advance to the WCHA Final Face-Off. The Beavers saw their season come to an end with the loss. Last season also saw the Gophers and Beavers split an October series on the road in Bemidji, Minn., before Minnesota swept BSU at home at Ridder Arena in November 2016.
Scouting the Beavers
Bemidji State finished the 2016-17 season with a record of 12-20-3. The Gophers eliminated the Beavers in the WCHA First Round.
Sophomore Emily Bergland posted the most points for the Beavers, tallying a total of 25 points (16g-9a). Brittni Mowat defended the net in 33 of the Beavers’ games, posting a .921 save percentage and a 2.43 goals against average.
Bemidji State graduated six seniors from last year's squad while adding seven freshmen for the 2017-18 season: Christina Kampa (Maple Grove, Minn.), Lydia Passolt (Chanhassen, Minn.), Paige Beebe (Ham Lake, Minn.), Kerigan Dowhy (The Pas, Manitoba), Lindsey Featherstone (Woodbury, Minn.), Makayla Langei (East Grand Forks, Minn.), and Clair DeGeorge (Anchorage, Alaska). Jim Scanlan will enter his third season as head coach of the team in 2017-18.
Last Time Out
The Gophers and Beavers last played in the WCHA First Round, when the Gophers won 3-2. Kelly Pannek led the Gophers with two goals, and Sidney Peters posted 18 saves in net.
Mowat Caps Off Impressive Career
Senior goaltender Brittni Mowat led the Beavers to 11 wins last season. Her .921 save percentage ranked 22nd in the nation, while her two shutouts ranked tied for 17th in the NCAA.
Minnesota's first road trip of the 2017-18 season is on the road at Bemidji State with a pair of 3:07 p.m. CT games on Friday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 14. The Gophers face the Beavers again before the first half of the season concludes, welcoming BSU to Minneapolis Friday, Dec. 1 and Saturday, Dec. 2.
