June 12, 2017

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women's hockey program has named the team’s 2017-18 captains. Seniors Sydney Baldwin and Cara Piazza will serve as co-captains for the upcoming season.

"I am very excited to announce that Sydney Baldwin and Cara Piazza will be our captains for the 2017-18 season," head coach Brad Frost said. "I'm confident in their abilities to lead the team both on and off the ice. I'm not surprised that their teammates selected them as captains. They both are great players and great students, and they are tremendous representatives of our program. We are looking forward to another great year of Gopher women's hockey."

Both Gophers enter their first season serving as captains. The duo was part of back-to-back national championship teams their freshmen and sophomore years at the University of Minnesota, and they have helped the program advance to three-straight NCAA Frozen Fours during their careers.

Baldwin enters her senior year having played in 120 career games. She is one point shy of 50 career points with 12 goals and 37 assists in her first three years with the program. Baldwin, a health services management and human resources development major, is a two-time WCHA All-Academic Team and Academic All-Big Ten team honoree along with earning WCHA Scholar Athlete accolades this past season. The Minnetonka, Minn., native was named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team as a freshman as well. She posted a career-high 22 points (5g-17a) as a sophomore and has a +108 plus/minus rating with 173 blocked shots in her career.

Piazza begins her senior year with 65 career points on 28 goals and 37 assists in 114 games played. She recorded a career-best 34 points (11g-23a) as a sophomore in 2015-16. Piazza is a two-time WCHA Scholar Athlete, WCHA All-Academic Team, and Academic All-Big Ten Team honoree who is studying mechanical engineering. The Darien, Ill., product is the first Illinois native to captain the team since Megan Bozek in 2012-13.

The Gophers open the season against Merrimack College the weekend of Friday, Sept 29 through Sunday, Oct. 1 at home at Ridder Arena.
