MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher women's hockey team and head coach Brad Frost are pleased to announce the addition of Sydney Scobee, a junior goaltender transferring to the University of Minnesota after beginning her college career at the University of Vermont. Scobee will join the Gophers for the 2018-19 season and be eligible to compete immediately.
A native of Minnetrista, Minn., Scobee spent two seasons playing for the Catamounts to begin her collegiate career. Scobee played in 31 career games for Vermont, posting a .923 save percentage and a 2.59 goals against average. After appearing in just three games as a freshman in 2016-17, Scobee was the Catamounts' go-to goaltender in 2017-18, recording a 9-15-4 record with three shutouts. A high school teammate of Grace Zumwinkle, Scobee graduated from Breck in 2016 and was honored as a Let's Play Hockey Senior Goalie of the Year semifinalist.
"We are excited that Sydney has come back to her home state to become a Gopher," head coach Brad Frost said. "Sydney is a good-sized goalie that takes up a lot of net. She makes the first save consistently and will add to our depth at the goaltending position."
Scobee joins six incoming freshmen to make up the newest class of Gophers for the 2018-19 season as Abby Boreen, Taylor Heise, Crystalyn Hengler, Emily Oden, Gracie Ostertag, and Catie Skaja join the Maroon & Gold as rookies.
The Gophers' lineup will be bolstered by the return of Kelly Pannek and Sarah Potomak and the addition of Amy Potomak as well. Pannek returns for her senior season as an Olympic gold medalist. Sarah Potomak returns for her junior season while Amy Potomak will make her collegiate debut after the sisters red-shirted the 2017-18 season while centralized with Canada's National Women's Team prior to the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
In 2017-18, Minnesota went 24-11-3 overall, won the program's seventh WCHA postseason title, and made the program's 11th straight and 16th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
