The University of Minnesota women's hockey team collected three WCHA Player of the Week honors on Wednesday as announced by the league office. Junior Amanda Kessel was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week for her eight-point weekend, while freshman Hannah Brandt was tagged Rookie of the Week for garnering five points. Senior Noora Raty received Defensive Player of the Week for posting two wins and becoming the NCAA's career wins record holder. The trio helped the Maroon & Gold sweep Minnesota Duluth this past weekend and claim their seventh WCHA regular season title.
Kessel notched eight points (3g-5a) the sweep of UMD. The junior forward began the series with a four-point Friday night (2g-2a) in the Gophers' 5-0 victory. On Saturday, she followed with another four-point game (1g-3a), including scoring the game-winning goal in the third period. Kessel, who leads the nation in scoring with 83 points, led the team with 11 shots on goal and a plus/minus ratio of +6.
Kessel shares the Offensive Player of the Week honor with North Dakota's Josefine Jakobsen. This is the fifth WCHA honor for the Madison, Wis. native this season and the ninth of her career.
Räty, who also received the Defensive Player of the Week accolade last week, garnered a pair of wins while also setting the NCAA career wins record. The senior goaltender made 24 saves on Friday night to post her 37th career shutout in a 5-0 win over the Bulldogs. Raty's win was the 101st of her career, which makes her the NCAA career wins record holder. On Saturday, the Finnish native had 16 saves in the Gophers' 6-2 win.
This is Räty's fourth WCHA Defensive Player of the Week this season and the 13th league honor of her career.
Brandt, who was Rookie of the Week last week, tallied five points (1g-4a) in the Gophers' sweep of Minnesota Duluth. The freshman notched a pair of assists in Friday night's 5-0 win over UMD. On Saturday, she recorded a power play goal in the second period and assisted on two other Gopher goals, including Kessel's game-winner. Brandt, who is second in the nation in scoring with 67 points, posted a plus/minus ratio of +5 on the weekend, which was only topped by Kessel.
The Vadnais Heights, Minn. native has now received Rookie of the Week honors seven times this year.
Minnesota hits the road this weekend as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to take on Ohio State. Games are slated for Friday at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
