MINNEAPOLIS – Meghan Lorence, a junior forward from Mounds View, Minn., has been named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week for Jan. 29, 2014, after leading the Golden Gophers with three points in their sweep over St. Cloud State last weekend.
Lorence recorded three points against the Huskies, scoring three goals on nine shots. She was +3 for the series. Her goals included both game-winners and a power-play goal, as Minnesota defeated St. Cloud State, 3-0 and 3-1.
In last Friday's 3-0 shutout, Lorence scored Minnesota’s first two goals to lead the Gophers to their third-straight shutout victory. She scored her 10th goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner, at 14:51 of the first period before scoring on the power-play at 8:40 of the second period. Lorence finished the game with two goals on four shots. She currently leads the Gophers with a .200 scoring percentage (12 goals, 60 shots).
Lorence then added her 12th goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win, scoring at 6:44 of the second period to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead. She finished with a +2 for the game as she was also on the ice for Minnesota’s third goal at 18:07 of the second period.
Lorence is currently on a four-game goal streak, during which she has five points on five goals. She is tied for second in the nation with five game-winning goals this season. With 12 goals in 22 games, Lorence ranks 18th in the nation and fourth among WCHA players with 0.55 goals per game.
This week's WCHA honor marks Lorence's second Offensive Player of the Week award of the season. She was also recognized by the league after posting four points (2g-2a) in Minnesota’s series sweep at Yale (Nov. 23-24).
Lorence and the No. 1 Gophers travel to Grand Forks, N.D., this weekend for a Friday/Saturday league series with No. 3/4 North Dakota.
