MINNEAPOLIS – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) has named sophomore goaltender Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) the league's Defensive Player of the Week.
Leveille recorded back-to-back shutout victories over Minnesota State last weekend, making 19 saves in each game. She held the Mavericks scoreless on five power-play opportunities in the series.
Last Friday saw Leveille make 19 saves as the Gophers outshot MSU 51-19 in a 4-0 win before 6,623 on the outdoor ice at TCF Bank Stadium in the Hockey City Classic. She followed that effort up with 19 more saves as Minnesota went on the road and earned a 5-0 win in the series finale at All Seasons Arena in Mankato on Sunday.
Leveille is now riding 126:41 of shutout hockey, including 6:41 of the Gophers’ 2-2 overtime tie with Ohio State on Jan. 11 prior to her back-to-back complete-game shutouts over the Mavericks.
Leveille and the Gophers are 22-1-1 overall. She ranks fourth in the nation and third among WCHA goaltenders with a 1.19 goals against average and a .948 save percentage. She also leads the WCHA and is second in the NCAA with eight shutouts.
This week's honor marks the second of the season for Leveille. She also picked up player of the week accolades on Oct. 16 after making a career-high 61 saves in Minnesota's series sweep over then-No. 4 Wisconsin.
Minnesota faces St. Cloud State at home at Ridder Arena this weekend. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. CT both Friday and Saturday nights. Live video, audio and stats are available at GopherSports.com.
