MINNEAPOLIS – Freshman forward Grace Zumwinkle has earned her first WCHA Player of the Month award, Powered by GoodWood Hockey, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) announced Wednesday. Zumwinkle is the league's Offensive Player of the Month honoree for December 2017.
Zumwinkle led all WCHA players with eight points, 2.00 points per game, four goals, 1.00 points per game, 1.00 assists per game, and one game-winning goal in four games during the month of December. Nationally, Zumwinkle's eight points were tied for fourth among all players and tied for the lead among all NCAA rookies.
The Excelsior, Minn., native helped Minnesota to a 2-1-1-0 record in four conference games last month. Zumwinkle had a four-game point streak in December, including three multi-point games with at least one goal in each game.
Zumwinkle led the Gophers with three points (2g-1a) in the team’s series split with Bemidji State (Dec. 1-2). Her two goals included the over-time game-winner in game one, and she logged nine shots on goal in the series. In Minnesota’s 3-2 overtime win in game one against the Beavers, Zumwinkle set up Caitlin Reilly’s game-tying power-play goal in the second period to make it 1-1. She then broke a 2-2 tie to seal a 3-2 overtime win when she scored her second game-winning goal of her career in dramatic fashion with just 26 seconds remaining in the five-minute overtime period. Zumwinkle was on the ice for all three of Minnesota’s goals in the game, including a power-play goal, a 4-on-4 goal, and the overtime game-winner. Game two saw Zumwinkle score her second goal of the weekend despite Minnesota falling 4-2.
The following weekend, Zumwinkle was named WCHA Rookie of the Week after leading the Gophers with five points (2g-3a) as Minnesota took four of six points from Minnesota Duluth. For the series, Zumwinkle's was on the ice for six of Minnesota's eight goals. In a 3-3 overtime tie in game one, Zumwinkle contributed to all three Gopher goals, scoring one and setting up the other two. In Minnesota’s 5-0 win over UMD in game two, Zumwinkle set up the team’s second goal before scoring her 11th goal of the season with just nine seconds remaining in the second period to put the Gophers up 5-0.
