We got in one more summer update with class starting at the University of Minnesota today. Ciara Gardner is one of four seniors on the Gophers squad. She talked her internship with ACES and gave some great advice for freshmen.
Gopher Sports: With summer coming to a close can you just talk about how it went for you and what you did?
Ciara Gardener: Summer has been really great. I trained all summer and recently just went back home to get in some vacation before school starts back up again. I visited with my parents and all my old friends. I went back to my old gym and visited with some of my old coaches and teammates. It was really nice to catch up with them. I also went to Miami for my friend’s birthday so that was really fun.
GS: You recently started an internship with ACES (Athletes Committed to Educating Students). How did you get involved with that and how has it been going?
CG: At first I just wanted to meet up with the coordinator to talk about what she does exactly with her job. Once we got talking she ended up offering me an internship. It has been pretty fun and I am just now getting into it. I am learning more and more each day.
GS: As you go into your senior season, what has it meant to you to be a Gopher gymnast and what are you hoping to get out of your last year?
CG: Just everything about being on this team has been really fun. We have had some great memories with each team I have been on here. The coaches are great and I am excited to work more closely with them in my last year. It is my last year so I just want to make sure I give it everything I have and experience everything I can while I can still do it.
GS: What advice do you have for freshmen just getting started?
CG: Be in the moment and live in the moment. Don’t think too far ahead or in the past, just be in the moment because it is going to go by really quickly. I feel like I was just a freshman yesterday. Enjoy everything we are doing because it is fun. Competition season is amazing. It is like nothing I have ever experienced before.
