The University of Minnesota women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high score of 194.275 in winning the annual Best of Minnesota Meet. Carmelina Carabajal once again led the way for the Gophers, posting the team’s best score in three of four events.

Minnesota tallied a 48.375 on the vault, led by Carmelina Carabajal and Jamie Bullock, who each earned marks of 9.825 to tie for first place. Carabajal tied her best score of the year, while Bullock set a career high. Kristin Furukawa also earned a career-best vault score with a 9.650 to place third.

The Gophers posted their best bars score in over two years with a 49.050. Five Minnesota gymnasts set or tied career-best scores on bars, led by Carabajal, who earned a 9.875 to win the event. Carabajal’s bars score is the best bars score for the team this season. The freshman trio of Kendra Elm, Kristin Furukawa, and Yuri Nagai scored three marks of 9.825, all career-high scores. Bullock tied her career-best bars score with a 9.700.

On the balance beam, the Gophers earned a 48.300. Carabajal and Ashley Stanton were the team leaders on beam, each earning scores of 9.675 to tie for first place. Bullock, Amanda Miles, and Angela Walker tied for third place with scores of 9.650.

Angela Walker was the top Minnesota performer on the floor, earning a 9.800 to win the floor title. Miles was the runner up, scoring 9.750. Rounding out the top three was Carabajal, who tallied a 9.725. As a team, Minnesota earned a 48.550 on floor, the second-best floor score of the 2008 season.

In the all around, Carabajal took first place with a total of 39.100. Angela Walker also competed in the all around for the Gophers, and earned a 38.025.

The Sports Pavilion crowd of 2,685 tied the eighth-highest attendance mark in team history.

The Gopher squad will next compete at Michigan on Feb. 16. The meet will begin at 5 p.m. (CST) and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
