PARK RIDGE, ILL. – Minnesota’s Lindsay Mable has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the period ending Jan. 26, it was announced on Monday.
Mable, a native of Aurora, Colo. (Eaglecrest HS/Colorado Gymnastics Institute), repeats as Big Ten Freshman of the Week after earning the same award after Minnesota’s quad meet win at Penn State on Jan. 19.
On Saturday, Mable keyed the Gophers' first-ever win against a No. 1 ranked team, as she captured titles on the balance beam, floor, and all-around in a quad meet victory against top-ranked Michigan, No. 20 Central Michigan and Iowa State.
Mable scored a total of 39.450 points in winning the all-around title, and she saved her best for last, scoring personal-bests of 9.900 on beam and 9.925 on floor to win both events and help Minnesota record its most points (196.800) in a meet since March 12, 2004.
It marks the third week in a row that Minnesota has had a gymnast honored by the Big Ten, as junior Kayla Slechta earned Event Specialist of the Week following the Gophers’ win versus No. 17 Washington on Jan. 12.
Minnesota’s other nominees for weekly honors this week were Mable for Gymnast of the Week and Slechta for Event Specialist of the Week. Penn State’s Sharaya Musser was named Gymnast of the Week, while Ohio State’s Sarah Miller earned Event Specialist of the Week.
Slechta entered Saturday's meet tied for first nationally on vault, and she broke the tie and ranks first by herself after her second 9.950 of the season. Slechta tied for first with Michigan's Sachi Sugiyama on vault, and also tied for third on floor exercise with a 9.875. She was one of five Minnesota gymnasts to score 9.875 or better on the event.
Minnesota, which is 10th in this week’s GymInfo Top 25 Rankings, travels to Michigan State for a meet on Friday evening at 6 p.m. CT. The Gophers’ next home meet takes place on Saturday, Feb. 9, versus Illinois. The meet is set for 4:00 p.m. CT start at the Sports Pavilion.
