PARK RIDGE, ILL. – Minnesota gymnast Lindsay Mable has been named the women's gymnastics Freshman of the Week by the Big Ten Conference for the week ending Jan. 19, it was announced on Monday.

Mable, a native of Aurora, Colo. (Eaglecrest HS/Colorado Gymnastics Institute), recorded scores of 9.800 or better on all four events to win the all-around title and help Minnesota win a quad meet at Penn State with a score of 195.525.

Mable tied teammate Kylie Schermann for first on floor exercise with a 9.875, tied for second on bars with a 9.800, was fifth on vault with a 9.825, and tied for eighth on beam with a 9.825. Her winning all-around score was 39.325, which finished just ahead of teammate Jenny Covers (39.250) and was .250 more than the closest opponent’s total.

It marks the second week in a row that Minnesota has had a gymnast honored by the Big Ten, as junior Kayla Slechta earned Event Specialist of the Week following the Gophers’ win versus No. 17 Washington. Slechta was also the most recent Minnesota gymnast to earn Freshman of the Week honors, on March 7, 2011.

Minnesota’s other nominees for weekly honors this week were Covers for Gymnast of the Week and Schermann for Event Specialist of the Week. Nebraska’s Emily Wong was named Gymnast of the Week, while Michigan’s Reema Zakharia and Ohio State’s Sarah Miller shared Event Specialist of the Week.

Covers recorded career-high totals on all four events to earn a second-place finish in the all-around at Penn State. Covers tied her career-high with a 9.875 to finish second on vault, tied for third on floor with a 9.850, and had an all-around total of 39.250 to take second behind Mable. Covers also tied for eighth on bars with a 9.775 and tied for 11th on beam with a 9.750.

Schermann recorded a career-best score of 9.875 on floor exercise to tie for first place with Mable. She also tied for third on vault with a 9.850 and tied for eighth on beam with a 9.825.

Minnesota, which is 12th in this week’s GymInfo Top 25 Rankings, will host a quad meet this weekend. The Golden Gophers will compete against No. 1 Michigan, No. 20 Central Michigan and Iowa State on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. CT at the Sports Pavilion.
