MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team jumped 12 spots, from 23rd to 11th, in the most recent GymInfo National Rankings.
The Golden Gophers were ranked No. 23 in the preseason poll, but debut at No. 11 in the first regular season ranking after soundly defeating then-No. 17 Washington, 195.550-193.500. It was the highest-ever team total in a season-opening meet for the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota is among four Big Ten programs ranked in the Top 25. Michigan tops the list at No. 2, while defending champion Nebraska is at No. 7, Minnesota is 11th, and Ohio State is 21st. Penn State (preseason 16th), and Illinois (preseason 18th) each dropped out of the Top 25 after being ranked in the preseason poll.
Minnesota travels to Penn State this weekend for a 6:00 p.m. CT meet on Saturday. Kent State and Towson will also compete. The Gophers' next home meet is set for Jan. 26 at 6:00 p.m., against Michigan, Central Michigan and Iowa State.
