University of Minnesota junior Carmelina Carabajal was named the Big Ten Women’s Gymnast of the Week for the week of January 8. Carabajal claims Gymnast of the Week accolades as the Golden Gophers placed third at the Cancun Classic last weekend, earning a team score of 192.725.
Carabajal had Minnesota’s highest individual score at the Cancun Classic with a 9.825 on the floor, placing fifth in the competition. She also had the best Gopher vault score of the meet with a 9.700. Carabajal’s best overall finish was in the all around competition where she placed third with a score of 38.850.
The Big Ten weekly award is the second of Carabajal’s career, after also winning the honor on March 13, 2007.
Minnesota will next compete at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday evening, when the Gophers host their annual Intrasquad Meet. The exhibition competition will begin at 6 p.m.
