cuThe Minnesota women's golf team is in second place after two rounds at the Alabama Capstone Intercollegiate Championship, being held at the Capstone Club in Brookwood, Ala. Seventh-ranked Tennessee cut an amazing 26 strokes off its first round total to take over the team lead with a total of 644. The Golden Gophers, after leading the first round, scored 329 on Saturday and stand eight strokes back at 654 heading into Sunday's final round.
?We struggled today, but the golf course was not any easier,? said Minnesota head coach Melissa Arthur of her team's performance. ?We have put ourselves into a good position going into the final round of the golf tournament and that's all you can ask for. We need to go out tomorrow and stick to our game plan and try to finish this tournament playing well. Tennessee is a top 10 program and they stepped it up and played well. If we play the way I think we can, we should be able to put some pressure on them in the final round.?
Golden Gopher junior Karyn Stordahl and freshman Tai Kinney are tied for eighth at 161, after recording identical scores of 78 in the first round and 83 in the second. Tennessee's Mary Jan Fernandez carded the lowest round of the tournament thus far, a 4-over par 75 on the 6,053 yard, par 71 course, to move to the top of the individual leaderboard at 152.
Minnesota also has two players tied for 26th at 164, sophomore Karen Quintelier and senior Cindy Cannon. Cannon dropped five strokes in the second round to card a 79, while Quintelier played added a consistent 84 after scoring 83 in the first round.
