Go Gophers!

So far this season the State of Michigan has been kind to the University of Minnesota women's golf team. The Gophers, coming off a second place finish last week at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, find themselves in position for another great finish this weekend in East Lansing, as they are in fourth place after 36 holes of the Mary Fossum Invite.

Minnesota trails Kent State by 12 strokes heading into the final 18 holes on Sunday. The host Michigan State Spartans are two strokes behind the Golden Flashes in second place and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are in third.

The Gophers were led by sophomore Teresa Puga on day one, after carding a 2-over par 146. She opened the tournament with an even par round of 72 in the morning session and shot a 2-over 74 in the afternoon. She is currently tied for fifth place, four strokes off the lead. Fellow sophomore Mary Narzisi is tied for 12th place after shooting a 6-over par 150 with rounds of 74 and 76.

Senior Kelli Berns, coming off a second place finish at the Wolverine Invite, is tied for 14th place after rounds of 75 and 76. Another Gopher sophomore, Michele Edlin, is tied for 33rd place while Samantha Sommers, another sophomore, is tied for 62nd. Junior Christine Herzog, playing the invitational as an individual, shot rounds of 78 and 83 and is tied for 51st.

The final 18 holes of the Mary Fossum Invite will be played on Sunday and can be followed at golfstat.com.
