The University of Minnesota, and women's head golf coach Michele Redman, recently announced the 2012-13 schedule.
Minnesota will open the 2012 fall campaign on Sept. 15 at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. The tournament, hosted by Michigan State University, will be in its 29th year and take place at MSU's Forest Akers West Golf Course.
After nearly two weeks off, the Gophers will head to University Park, Pa. to take part in the Nittany Lion Invitational Sept. 28-30. It will be Minnesota's first trip to State College since the 2008 Big Ten Championships.
Following another break, Minnesota will play in the Hoosier Fall Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. on Oct. 13-14 and finish the fall season at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Oct. 21-23. It will be the first time Redman, a four-time All-Big Ten selection and member of the Indiana University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame, has returned to IU as a head coach.
The spring season will appear similar to last season, as Minnesota will make consecutive appearances in four of the five events, beginning with the Central District Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Feb. 18-19. The Central District Invite will be the only competition for the Gophers in the month of February.
The Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz. on March 8-10 is next for the Gophers before heading to St. George, Utah for the BYU Entrada. Minnesota finished in a tie for fifth place at the 2011 Clover Cup.
The Gophers will open the month of April at the Rebel Intercollegiate in Oxford, Miss. Minnesota finished fifth at the 2011 event with a season-low combined score of 899 (306-302-291). The score is the 12th-lowest 54-hole card in the history of the program while the final round tally of 291 is the 10th-lowest in Gopher annuals.
The Final regular season event will take place April 20-21 in Columbus, Ohio at the Lady Buckeye Invitational before the squad attends the 2013 Big Ten Championships April 26-28 in French Lick, Ind. Minnesota finished eighth at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Michigan State is the defending champion.
The NCAA Regionals have been scheduled for May 9-11 while the NCAA Championships will take place May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
Minnesota returns all seven players that saw tournament action during the 2011-12 season, led by junior Banchalee Theinthong, senior Jackie Shepherd and sophomore Carmen Laguna. The trio finished with the top three stroke averages on the season. Theinthong led the group and was named second team All-Big Ten. Shepherd is the regining Team MVP.
