University of Minnesota senior Kelli Berns shot a 4-over par 75  Monday (Aug. 4) and is in a tie for second place after the first round of the 2008 Minnesota Women’s State Open at Stonebrooke golf Club in Shakopee. She is two shots back of the leader Katie Detlefsen as the event heads into the final round.

A trio of Burns' Gopher teammates are also in the field of the 2008 Minnesota Women’s State Open. Sophomores Samantha Sommers and Michele Edlin are five and nine shots, respectively, behind the leader  Detlefsen while senior Young Na Lee is 13 shots back after an opening round 86.

Berns, who redshirted for the Gophers last season, was one of two Minnesota players to compete in all 10 events during the 2006-07 season. As a junior in 2006-07, she finished with a stroke average of 79.41, the second lowest on the team, and established a season-low 54-hole score of 235 on two occasions, at the Lady Paladin Invitational and the Rio Verde Invitational.

The second and final round of 2008 Minnesota Women’s State Open at Stonebrooke continues tomorrow morning (Tuesday, Aug. 5) and can be followed on www.minnesotapga.com.
