pThe University of Minnesota women's golf team carded a 329 and remain seventh after three rounds of the Big Ten Women's Golf Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Gophers are 65 shots behind first place Ohio State, but only six shots behind sixth-place Iowa. The Buckeyes are 38 shots clear of second place Michigan and may have wrapped up the Big Ten title with worse weather looming for Sunday's fourth round.
The weather for the third round was bad enough. When the first ball was struck this morning at 9 a.m., Eastern time, the temperature was 36 degrees with rain and winds gusting to 30 mph. The rain quickly changed to snow, but players pressed on.
"It was miserable out there," said head coach Katie Hanneman. "At times, it bordered on unfair, but we played great. We had a couple of rounds going very well, but we turned back into the wind and that had a huge impact on how we finished. We didn't lose any ground, and if we play tomorrow, we feel we have a great shot at moving up."
One of those players that had a stellar round going was junior Sarah Butler. Butler was 4-over through 15 before she took a double bogey on the uphill par 3 8th. Butler had addressed her put for birdie on the 8th green, but the wind moved the ball which resulted in a penalty stroke. Butler three-putted the green and triple bogeyed the par 4 9th hole before finishing with a par. The Roseau, Minn., native is tied for 28th at 26-over 242 after carding an 81 today.
Sophomore Sophie Stubbs continues to lead the Maroon and Gold after firing an 83 today. Stubbs is tied for 22nd at 24-over 240. Freshman Emily Brand carded another solid round today with an 82 and is 40th at 246. Senior Terra Petsinger is 41st at 247 one shot ahead of sophomore Samantha Braschler. Junior Jessica Thomas is in 52nd place at 255 after an 83 in the third round.
A shotgun start is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., tomorrow morning weather permitting. The forecast for the Ann Arbor area tomorrow is windy with snow of varying intensity. Cold. High 39F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of snow 90%. Snow accumulating 4 to 6 inches.
