The University of Minnesota shot a combined score of 312 in the final round of the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. to finish in seventh place. The Gophers’ 54-hole combined score of 921 was one shot behind sixth place Wisconsin.
Sophomore Carmen Laguna turned in the round of the day for Minnesota with a final round 76 on Sunday. Laguna and junior Banchalee Theinthong, who carded a 77 on Sunday, finished with 54-hole scores of 225 and in a tie for 18th place. The Gopher duo combined for five top-20 finishes a season ago.
Senior Jackie Shepherd shot a final round 79 and finished in a tie for 39th place with a three-day card of 235. Sophomore Sarinee Thitiratanakorn carded an 80 on Sunday and finished in a tie for 46th while sophomore Anna Laorr added an 81 and finished in a tie for 70th place.
Purdue took home the team title with a 54-hole score of 875, seven strokes ahead of host Michigan State and 12 shots over third place finisher Notre Dame. Texas State and the University of Miami round out the top five.
Texas State’s Krista Puisite finished as the medalist with a one-under par 215. She was the only individual in the field to finish under par. Michigan State’s Caroline Power’s finished second.
Minnesota will be off until heading to University Park, Pa. to take part in the Nittany Lion Invitational Sept. 28-30.
