After the first round of action at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., Minnesota is in a tie for 15th place with a team score of 305. Also posting a 305 was UNC-Greensboro. Aubrie Nelson and Banchalee Theinthong shot the Golden Gophers' best individual scores.

Nelson and Theinthong are part of a 10-way tie for 37th. Each of them completed round one in 74 strokes, eight off the pace set by leader Erica Popson of Tennessee. This is Nelson's first tournament as a Gopher, as she redshirted her true freshman season. Freshmen Sarinee Thitiratanakorn (t-99th) and Carmen Laguna (t-113th) are also competing in their first official NCAA event. Junior Jackie Shepherd, the veteran of this week's travel squad, is tied for 70th.

As a team, Minnesota leads the Big Ten schools in the field. Penn State and Wisconsin are tied for 19th. Overall, LSU sits on top of the leaderboard with a team score of 280.

The Golden Gophers are scheduled to start on the 10th hole at 7:00 a.m. CST Monday. The final round of the Cougar Classic will take place on Tuesday.
