The Big Ten Conference announced Monday that University of Minnesota redshirt freshman Kayla Hirt was named the Big Ten Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Gophers' contest vs. Northern Iowa Friday night.
Hirt posted her first-career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, in Minnesota's victory vs. the Panthers. The forward shot 57 percent from the field and added one block and one steal.
It was the first weekly honor of Hirt's career and the second Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor for Minnesota this season, as rookie guard Mikayla Bailey received the honor on Nov. 19.
The Gophers close out their non-conference schedule at home on Dec. 30, taking on Creighton in a 7:00 p.m. contest.

The Gophers' non-league opponents will include at least six 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifiers.
