The University of Minnesota men's and women's basketball programs will officially begin the season by hosting "Gopher All-Star Friday Night" on Oct. 12 at Williams Arena. The event, formally known as "Midnight Madness" and "Tubby's Tip-off", will begin at 7:00 p.m. The entire night's schedule is below. The Williams Arena doors will open at 7:00 p.m. in preparation for the evening's first event.
"Gopher All-Star Friday Night" will have the look of NBA All-Star weekend and feature a two-ball shooting competition, a three-point shooting competition, a dunk contest and a scrimmage.
Also included in "Gopher All-Star Friday Night" will be prize drawings throughout the evening. The main prize includes a trip for two to the Battle 4 Atlantis, held at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. Minnesota opens the Battle 4 Atlantis on Thanksgiving Day against Duke.
The Gopher women open the season with back-to-back home tournaments, the Best Buy Classic and the Subway Classic, beginning on Nov. 10. The squad will then travel to Mexico over Thanksgiving for the Cancun Challenge, before taking on Virginia in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Minnesota opens its Big Ten Conference schedule on Jan. 3 at Michigan State and hosts its league home opener on Jan. 10 vs. Ohio State.
