Dear Gopher Women's Basketball Fans,

Greetings from Gopher Women's Basketball, I hope everyone had a great summer!  Our fall sports season is off to a great start, with all of our teams opening with victories.

My heartfelt congratulations to Lindsay Whalen and Janel McCarville, for continuing to represent Minnesota on the hardwood with the Minnesota Lynx!  They are making us proud with all of their accomplishments and we wish them the best of luck as they head into the playoffs.

We have started school and practice and I'm really pleased with our team at this time of the year.   Everyone asks me, "When do you get started?"  Well, we never stop!  Our players have been playing non-stop this summer and we can tell.  They are in great shape and everyone has come back better and ready to go.  Sari Noga and Micaëlla Riché are embracing their roles as seniors and leading this team.

2013-14 Schedule:  You can find our updated schedule on-line at  Our non-conference schedule features Miami, Kansas, UCLA, and Auburn at home.  We will be challenged on the road as well.  The Big 10 continues to be a top conference and will be tough.  We are ready to battle in the Barn this year!

Rachel Banham:  Watch for Rachel to be listed among the elite players in the pre-season watch lists.  We are most excited about her ability to lead our team back to the top.

Newbies:  Joanna Hedstrom, Stabresa McDaniel and Amanda Zahui B. are an exciting addition to our group.  They adjusted to college life by taking classes this summer and participating in the newly NCAA sanctioned summer practices.  You'll want to keep an eye on their contributions this season.  I'm very excited about them!

New NCCA Rules:  We now have a 10 second back court rule this year. To keep the game moving, media timeouts have been adjusted.  And finally, hashmarks have been added to the baseline to create a lower defensive box.  This box is designed to "clean-up" play around the basket.  (Much like you see in the WNBA.)

Recruiting:  Recruiting is going very well for our program!  I wish I could talk about it now, but we have some exciting players joining our team in 2014!  My staff has been working very hard in this area to bring the "right fit" into our program and to the Big Ten!

Pre-Season Tip-Off Dinner:  We will be hosting a Tip-Off Dinner at Golden Valley Country Club on October 16.  We really hope you can join us and help create an exciting, electric feeling for the season!  You will be receiving information about this event soon.  For more information, you may email our office at

My continued thanks for all of your support!  Hope to see you in the Barn this year!

Go Gophers!
