Aug. 31, 2012
The University of Minnesota women's basketball program, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced its complete 2012-13 schedule Friday, with the Golden Gophers set to play 16 league contests and 14 non-conference games, including 18 contests at Williams Arena. Game times and television rights will be released at a later date.
The Golden Gophers are set to open the Big Ten season with two-straight road games, at Michigan State on Jan. 3 and at Wisconsin on Jan. 6, before hosting their league home-opener vs. Ohio State on Jan. 10 at Williams Arena.
The Buckeyes are one of five teams that Minnesota will play home-and-home series against, with the Golden Gophers also taking on Purdue, Nebraska, Penn State and Illinois twice over the course of the year. The Maroon and Gold will host Michigan, Iowa and Northwestern in single-game action at Williams Arena, while taking on Indiana on the road.
The conference is entering into the first year of a four-year agreement that will rotate the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament between Hoffman Estates and Indianapolis. The 2013 and 2015 postseason tournaments will be contested at the Sears Centre Arena, while the 2014 and 2016 events will be staged at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Before opening Big Ten play, Pam Borton's squad will take part in three tournaments early in the season, two at Williams Arena and one south of the border in Cancun, Mexico.
The first of two-straight tournaments at the Barn, the Best Buy Classic will see the Gophers take on Washington State and either South Dakota State or Villlanova on Nov. 10-11, while Minnesota will face Ohio University and either UNLV or Maine during the ninth-annual Subway Classic on Nov. 17-18.
The Maroon and Gold will participate in the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 22-24), and will play Richmond, James Madison and Missouri.
The Gophers return to Minneapolis for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge contest on Nov. 29 vs. Virginia, before making the trip to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Kansas in their lone non-league road game on Dec 2.
Five-straight home contests will close out the non-league schedule for Minnesota, with games against Denver (Dec. 5), UMKC (Dec. 7), Robert Morris (Dec. 9), Northern Iowa (Dec. 21) and Creighton (Dec. 30).
The Golden Gophers' first games will be a pair of exhibitions at Williams Arena, with the Maroon and Gold taking on Concordia University, St. Paul on Oct. 31 and Minnesota State University, Mankato on Nov. 4.
