MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota Athletics Director Mark Coyle confirmed Monday that Head Coach Marlene Stollings, who has led the Gopher women's basketball program for the past four seasons, is resigning to take the same position at Texas Tech.
"I appreciate what Coach Stollings accomplished in her time with us, particularly this past season when her team provided some great memories for Gopher fans. We wish her the best in her new position," said Coyle. "We have already begun identifying candidates to be our next head coach. Our program has a history of success, brand-new facilities that are among the best in the country, and a talented core returning. I'm excited to meet with candidates and share everything Gopher Women's Basketball has to offer."
Stollings departs after the most successful campaign in her four years at Minnesota. This past season, the Gophers reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, finishing 24-9 after tying for third in the Big Ten regular season and picking up the program's first NCAA tournament win since 2009. It was the second time in Stollings' four years at the helm that the Gopher reached the NCAA tournament, the other coming in her first season (2014-15). Stollings departs with an 82-47 (.636) overall mark with the Gophers and a 38-30 (.559) Big Ten record.
Previous to her time at Minnesota, Stollings spent two years as the head coach at Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) and a single season leading the women's basketball program at Winthrop. Her career head coaching record over those seven seasons stands at 133-89 (.599). This mark does not include her stint as the interim head coach at New Mexico State in 2002-03. Stollings has also coached on staffs at Jacksonville, Wright State, Saint Louis and Ole Miss.
