The University of Minnesota women's basketball team will host SMU Sunday at Williams Arena in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). Tip off for the contest is set for 5:00 p.m., which will follow the 2:00p.m. Gopher men's basketball NIT second-round game.
Minnesota defeated Green Bay, 62-60, Wednesday night in the opening round of the WNIT to improve its record to 21-12 on the season and move onto second-round play for the second time in three appearances.
With a game-high 31 points on the night, which included the game-winning three pointer with just seconds remaining on the clock, junior guard Rachel Banham broke Minnesota's single-season scoring record and enters Sunday's contest with 1,957 points. She needs just 43 points to become the fourth Gopher in program history to reach the 2,000-point milestone.
The Mustangs earned their trip to the second round Thursday night with an 84-72 victory over Texas Southern in their first-round contest at home. Keena Mays scored 32 points to help SMU improve to 18-13 on the year.
It will be the first meeting between the Gophers and the Mustangs.
